Scientists led by Ross Mitchell from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences analyzed samples of Scaglia Rossa limestone from Italy. It contains many microscopic crystals of magnetite, where traces of the old magnetic field remain, thanks to which its strength in different years and the position of the magnetic poles can be known.The study showed that about 84 million years ago, the so-called true wandering from the poles. That is, the Earth’s crust shifted relative to the planet’s axis of rotation. In total, the poles shifted about 12 degrees, but after five million years they almost returned to their original position. The discovery of this wandering of the poles coincided with the results of the modeling, according to which, from the data on the movement of the lithospheric plates, about 80-90 million years ago, the entire earth’s crust should have moved.

Scientists led by Ross Mitchell from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences analyzed samples of Scaglia Rossa limestone from Italy.
