Facebook plans to hire 10,000 employees in the EU for its ‘metaverse

Facebook announced yesterday a great expansion plan in the European Union that contemplates the hiring of 10,000 technology professionals in the next five years. According to a statement, the countries where the big tech expected to sign workers are Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands and Ireland. In all of them, the multinational led by Mark Zuckerberg already has open offices.

Sources consulted from the group could not offer more details about the strategic plan, such as the investment, the geographical distribution of the workers or the opening of centers. In the statement, the company said that it has chosen the EU due to the large size of its market, the level of universities and qualified talent. It also reveals that the hiring of 10,000 professionals is limited to a macroproject: the creation of a metaverso , an online universe that will work with augmented and virtual reality technology and where millions of people will be able to access in the form of avatars to hold meetings, buy clothes and digital land with cryptocurrencies.

It is a futuristic concept and the company recognizes that the results will not materialize for 10 to 15 years. To achieve this, Facebook also plans to collaborate with third-party companies, developers and creators, as well as policy makers.

The firm ensures that no company will be the sole owner and manager of the metaverso , which will operate as the internet does now. However, yesterday suspicions were raised about the data privacy policy that Facebook could apply to users, in view of the problems faced by the company for the management of its social networks and WhatsApp. Likewise, doubts were raised about the project since the company has already tried unsuccessfully to promote other augmented reality services.

However, Facebook is not the only firm that wants to create a metaverso . The video game company Epic Games has raised 1 billion to build its own online universe.
